Abstract
Objectives: This study aims to eliminate the confusion associated with the use of terms of foreign origin in scientific works of rhinoplasty and otoplasty produced in Turkey by standardizing the terminology of these fields.
Methods: Related reference books were reviewed in order to determine the technical terms about rhinoplasty and otoplasty, terms were determined by prioritizing those that can rise difficulty in finding an appropriate translation in terms of grammatical rules and were grouped under the headings of grafts, sutures, surgical incision, osteotomy, technical and deformity. We used English-Turkish and Turkish Language Institution dictionaries for the translations of the terms.
Results: Hundred and twenty technical terms were determined as 29 on grafts, 10 on sutures, 10 on incision, 11 on osteotomies, 26 on surgical techniques and 34 on deformities. These terms were translated into Turkish considering the appropriateness criteria to grammar. The best possible practical and accurate translations were suggested for the terms with more than one translation. Some of the words registered by the Turkish Language Institution were stated with reference to the original language and form of the word. In addition, we summarized the specified terms and their Turkish translations in tables in alphabetical order to provide convenience and practicality in study and reference.
Conclusion: This study produced in Facial Plastic Surgery needs to be improved, and there is also a need to do similar linguistic studies in all main subjects with a terminological diversity.
