Abstract

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the odors recognized by Turkish people and standardize these odors for odor diseases.

METHODS: Odor test was implemented to 200 individuals (103 males, 97 females; mean age 35.72 years; range 15 to 60 years) who have not experienced active infection and have passed the butanol threshold test. Twenty different odors contained in bottles with roll-on caps were smelled by the subjects by rubbing in equal amounts on blotting papers and subjects were asked what the odor was accompanied by six multiple choice alternatives.

RESULTS: Identification score was above 65% for strawberry, banana, rose, mint, clove, cinnamon, lemon, orange, lavender, and garlic; between 20 to 65% for basil, apple, peach, lilac, juniper, and nigella; and below 20% for myrtle, melissa, cardamom, and elaeagnus.

CONCLUSION: Odors of strawberry, banana, rose, mint, clove, cinnamon, lemon, orange, lavender, and garlic are suitable as basic odor choices in odor tests to be performed in Turkey.
