Abstract

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to review our approach to deep neck abscesses of dental origin.

METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed files of eight patients (3 males, 5 females; mean age 40.5±12.1 years; range 22 to 59 years) who admitted to Başkent University Adana Teaching and Research Center Ear-Nose-Throat Clinic between July 2008 and July 2014 due to deep neck abscess of dental origin and were administered in-patient treatment. We evaluated patients’ demographical features, examination and imaging findings, and surgery notes.

RESULTS: Of the patients, we observed that abscess developed in parapharyngeal zone in two, submandibular zone in one, sublingual zone in one, masticatory zone in two, submandibular and sublingual zones in one, and masticatory and submandibular zones in one. Origins of abscesses were upper molar tooth in one patient and lower molar tooth in others. Abscesses which did not respond to medical treatment were treated surgically.

CONCLUSION: Infections of the teeth may transform into life threatening deep neck infections and abscesses if not treated adequately. While medical treatment and treatment of the tooth with disease may be sufficient at early stages, surgery in addition to medical treatment may be required if any complication develops.
