Abstract
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the correlation between staging and presence of perineural, vascular, and extracapsular invasions which are prognostic factors in oral cavity squamous cell cancers.
METHODS: The study included 62 patients (36 males, 26 females; mean age 63.8±14.6 years; range 28 to 89 years) who were operated due to oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma between February 2002 and April 2013 in Başkent University Adana Dr. Turgut Noyan Application and Research Center. For treatment, the patients were performed surgery and some patients were performed radiotherapy and chemotherapy in addition to surgery.
RESULTS: Of the patients, 40 were in the early stage (stage 1 and 2) and 22 were in the advanced stage (stage 3 and 4). Of the patients in the early stage, three had perineural invasion and one had vascular invasion. Of the patients in the advanced stage, three had extracapsular invasion, 12 had perineural invasion, and four had vascular invasion.
CONCLUSION: According to our study findings, the prevalence of prognostic factors including perineural, vascular, and extracapsular invasions increases as the cancer stage advances.
